Savings Opportunity: Free Music
There was a time on the Internet that free music meant stolen music. That’s not the case any more because there are lots of options at the time of this writing. The first place to check out is Podcasting. The second is online sites that offer free streaming music. By saving money on music you may be able to put aside money that was going to entertainment expenses and shoot that money into other areas of your budget or into some retirement fund.
Podcasts
There are many free podcasts online where you can get high quality music in various listening formas (most of them radio-like). Some bands also offer podcasts where they will share music for free to subscribers.
- Coverville.com - a fantastic podcast offering high quality covers by great musicians of great music. Brian Ibbott, the host does a fantastic job of mixing things up and sometimes you’ll get a chance to beat he and his wife, Tina, at music trivia. Give this a listen, I’ve been listening for several years now and love the show.
- Spin180.net - an indie-alternative Christian podcast featuring unknown and some signed artists. About one hour of free music each week, plus a few bonus movie reviews at times. This used to play on a local Christian station in DFW when I lived there (and I believe still does).
- They Might Be Giants Podcast - if you’re a fan of the often zany, always creative duo of the Johns in They Might Be Giants you’ll love their podcast! These guys amuse me almost every single show and its put out one or more times a month.
Online Streams
There are two sources for free online music streams that I like to use:
- Pandora.com - a free online music stream (click on the ads every once in a while to keep them supported) that has introduced me to a number of bands I’ve not heard of but I’m glad I’ve heard. You can create channels/stations that allow you to listen to similar music to bands or songs you already like.
- Napster.com - since the free music revolution has put money into the pockets of some music companies napster had to compete legally. Their website lets you stream albums and songs into your browser. This is a great way to hear an entire album at no charge to you.
