The Lesson from the Storm

Growing up in church I heard variations of the following parable:

A man stays at his house as a major storm is coming, the rest of his neighbors have evacuated his neighborhood as the driving rain hit hard.  He says, “God will save me.”  As the storm arose to his front porch a person came by in a canoe and offered him a ride to safety.  The water continued to rise as he watched his house fill with water and his possessions float away.  He climbed to his roof and sat on the edge.  A fishing boat with a small motor came by and offered him a ride to safety.  He declined saying, “God will save me.” Not much time passed as the storm hammered his house and beat on his saturated shirt.  A helicopter came high above battling the winds and a loud voice boomed out, “Sir, please, grab the line, we’ll pull you up.”

“God will save me!,” he shouted.  His body was unfortunately found floating later down the river from the valley he had once lived in.

Some tellings set him at St. Peter’s gate where  he asks why God didn’t save him.  St. Peter exclaims, “We sent three people to rescue you!”

The point of this parable isn’t just for you to chuckle at a religious story but more is intended to draw a parallel into our own lives.  We often have early warning signs of credit card debt, early warning signs of a financial problem, and sometimes early warning signs of health issues.  By ignoring those things we often forfeit help and resolution.  Had I looked at the problems of my finances earlier I might have not been in debt for long, I might have cut things off or I might have been warning others much sooner.

Take a look at your life and always be prepared to be humble and learn something.  Its better when you see it coming on rather than just identifying it by looking back.
