Change Your Own Car Oil
I changed the oil in my Honda tonight. It cost me $7.99 for the filter and $9.56 or so for the oil (plus tax). I might have gotten either of those items for cheaper somewhere else, but I haven’t begun keeping a price book yet (though my wife and I discussed it earlier today and we’re going to start keeping a price book shortly). I found a filter on Amazon.com for less. You might possibly get your oil changed for less at a few places but I don’t trust them. I took my old Dodge Stratus to a WalMart location where they changed oil and they forgot to tighten the oil filter correctly and it leaked oil until I took it back and demanded they fix it. It cost me $13.99 for the service, but I didn’t get what I didn’t pay for.
Doing it myself I got it done for significantly less than an oil place I do trust and I got to accomplish something (which always feels good) as well as doing something that feels handy for my family. You may not choose to change your own motor oil for any number of reasons, but whatever you choose, take a look at the value to make sure its worth it. I enjoyed it, but maybe you’re not a car oil type of person. Me? I’m going to go upstairs and take a shower to get this petroleum out of my hair ![]()

I used to change my own, but with my current cars I have lifetime free oil changes, so I don’t mess with it anymore. It does save money, but it can be a bit messy.
Thanks for the link by the way, and let me know how keeping a price book works for you. Now, if I can just remember to bring my blackberry with me all the time….
