Savings Throughout My House Part V: The Kitchen

The kitchen has all sorts of things in it that we’d like to remodel - when that time comes we’ll look into upgrading various appliances and fixtures for efficiency, this post will just look at smaller tasks that will not cost me thousands and thousands of dollars to achieve :)

Our kitchen has a door that goes out to our garage, that door needs to be sealed well so that the air will not bleed through it and make the house colder in winter and hotter in the summer. This will cost me an unknown amount because I’ll need to find a door that meets fire code requirement, my wife’s interior decoration requirements and meets my efficiency requirements. Not impossible to predict so I’m going to estimate this will cost $250.00.

Our kitchen window that is over the sink needs blinds or a serious curtain to handle the insulation duties and block some of the heat and light that come into the kitchen. We’ve got a covered back patio and so that helps keep things to a minimum but it would be good to have a better mechanism.

We have a sliding glass door (double paned) that we would do well to get covered with some insulating film and probably some sort of vertical blinds so that we can block the light and cold there as well.

I need to use some more insulation for hot water pipes that come out of the wall - they’re cheap and they can help reduce heat dissipation into the under cabinet spaces.

This room already has some CFL lights but I need to research alternative lights that work more efficiently for our fan/light fixture over the dining table.
