Request for Feedback: An Online Price Book

Recently bloggers have been writing about price books as a way to save money when grocery shopping.  This turned a light bulb on in my head: what if you could contribute to what was essentially a wiki-like price book?  What if you could:

  • Specify your shopping postal code (zip code) and see what prices had been input in your area for various stores?
  • Specify your shopping list (and staples) and get a custom shopping list based on what stores have the best prices for each?
  • Access the info on a portable computer like a cell phone or iPhone and know you’re getting the best price?
  • Have a chart that showed you the price cycle for the items so you could see where in the cycle you are?

I’m interested in doing the coding as I have time, but I need to know if people are interested.  I could go with the ‘if you build it they will come’ approach but I’d rather not pour hours and hours of time into such a project and have folks respond negatively :)  Would you use it?

To answer one pre-emptive question: I’d like to have it be ad supported with Google Ads or something of the sort, no membership costs would be involved.
