Freeze!

Yesterday I read an article explaining that our pillows harbor germs, bacteria and generally yucky things.  Pillows that we sleep on at night.  Pillows that some people may drool or breath through as they sleep.  One way you can kill the germs and bacteria is to freeze your pillow.  You may be able to save money on your household expenses and medical bills by doing some of the following:

  • Change and wash your bedding regularly.  If you’ve got the right type of sheets and linens that will allow you to do so add a little bleach or use hot water to kill germs (check the washing instructions!  I don’t want to recommend you ruin your bedding).
  • Freeze your pillow for 12 hours or so to kill anything that may possibly have ‘landed’ between washings of linens.
  • Flip your mattress (assuming you have a mattress that is to be flipped, sleep number type beds, for example shouldn’t be).  You’ll want to follow your mattress maker’s instructions but I recall every three months being what our older mattress was to have.
  • When you flip your mattress spray some sort of anti-microbial/anti-bacterial spray such as Febreze on the mattress to help stave off the germs.

What other things do you do to help preserve your health and keep your household items in good shape?

Randy, it is interesting that you wrote this, as I am reading it while suffering from allergies. Many of my allergies are due to the fact that my cat sleeps on my pillow after rolling in the dirt outside. I don’t like it when she does that, but sometimes I am so asleep that I don’t realize it. One of the things that I do to ward off allergies with my golden retriever and cat coming in covered in one sort of allergen or another is I actually spray them with anti-allergen Febreze. I don’t know if this is safe and the cat really hates it, but niether of my pets have become sick from it (yet, knock on wood). I find that many insurance companies don’t want to pay for allergy medicine since claritin and other brands have gone OTC. I wonder if an air purifier would help the allergen situation and possibly save money for us in the long run as I pay for allergy medicine for 3 of our 4 members of the family. That’s all I have to say about that… Have a great week.
