Something to Do With a Piano Besides Play It

If you have a piano you may have it for various reasons: music, a very large decoration, or, like me, to show off that your parents don’t have a way to get it up into their fifth floor apartment.  But if you have a piano you may have a lurking surprise: dust!  Inside of the sound chamber is a big gaping dust hole waiting to collect dust, but even worse: allergens.  You may want to add this to the semi-yearly list of things to clean out.  The dust settles on the strings and deadens their sound as well as collects at the bottom of the sound chamber and then, when played, stirs up and could give you a surprise allergy attack - which could be a medical expense you don’t need (which begs the question of whether you need medical expenses?).

You may want to consult your local piano repairman for specific techniques (or to hire his services if you don’t want to touch the dusty mess yourself), but I myself have used a vacuum to clear out the dust and any cob webs that may linger from little arachnids.  You’ll definitely not want to use any spray on cleaners because those could rust the strings and make them sound worse than the dust was making them sound.

So, save some money on medical expenses, piano repairs and such by keeping your piano clean on the inside & out!
